Sure, stars have been sporting campy looks at the bash for years, but this year, it’s the official dress code.

Launchd in 1948 as a midnight supper which cost $50 a head, today Gala tickets are reported to go for $35,000, and tables for $300,000. What is ‘Camp’?
Inspired by cultural critic Susan Sontag’s Oscar Wilde-dedicated, 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp’,” the night is dedicated to being over-the-top and tongue-in-cheek-chic.

“Camp has deep historical precedent,” a narrator says in the Met’s video on the concept. “Camp is a woman walking around in a dress made of three million feathers,” says the narrator, referencing both a line from Sontag’s essay and how Anna Wintour, who’s been overseeing the event since 1995, has described her outfit this year.
